Nikolaos Samaras received his Diploma in Applied Informatics from the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece in 1996 and his Ph.D. in Applied Informatics from the same University in 2001. Between 1998 and 2000, he served on the faculty of the Technological Institute of Western Macedonia, as an adjacent Lecturer. In 2003, he moved to the University of Macedonia, Department of Applied Informatics. From April 2016, till this day he is serving as director of the Computational Methodologies & Operations Research (CMOR) Laboratory.
Professor Samaras’s current research interests are at the interface between computer science and operations research, with applications in a variety of engineering and scientific systems:
- Linear/Non Linear optimization: theory, algorithms, and software.
- Network optimization: theory, algorithms, and software.
- Integer optimization: theory, algorithms, and software.
- Scientific computing: HPC, and GPU-programming.
His research work has resulted in: (a) the development of a new algorithmic family for solving linear and network optimization problems; (b) the efficient implementation of the revised simplex algorithm using GPU; and (c) novel algorithms and software for operations research.
He has served on the editorial board of the Operations Research: An International Journal. He has also served as reviewer in many journals, including Mathematical Programming Computation, Computational Optimization and Applications, Computers and Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, Operations Research Letters, Applied Mathematics and Computation, International Journal of Computer Mathematics, and Optimization Methods and Software. He has also served on numerous positions within HELORS (HELlenic Operations Research Society).
He has awarded with Thomson ISI/ASIS&T Citation Analysis Research Grant, (2005) (http://www.asis.org/Bulletin/Dec-05/inside.html).
Professor Samaras has published more than 35 journal papers including Computers and Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, Discrete Optimization, Applied Mathematics and Computation, International Journal of Computer Mathematics, Electronics Letters, Computer Applications in Engineering Education, Scientometrics, Journal of Computational Science, Journal of Systems and Software, and Applied Thermal Engineering. Also, he has published more than 85 conference papers. Finally, he is the co-author of 4 textbooks (2 in English and 2 in Greek).
